Primary Schools Folklore Project

Kerry Folklore’s Schools Project was born of an idea to promote communication between children and their grandparents.  Pupils from 4 schools in County Kerry, Ireland, spoke with grandmothers and grandfathers and made a project about what they found out.

The recent children’s projects are published on this site.

Kerry Folklore would like to thanks everyone involved in this project, including the teachers, the pupils and their grandparents.

The project, which was partly DEIS funded, was inspired by a similar project which ran in primary schools throughout Ireland from 1937-38 and was called the Schools’ Scheme.  This is a comprehensive survey of folklore collected from schoolchildren throughout Ireland which is held in the National Folklore Collection at UCD.
